The Road Not Taken In The Choices Of Life Essays - Rhyme
The Road Not Taken in the Choices of Life I shall be telling this with a sign Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I ? Took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. (Frost 751) The narrator of this last stanza of The Road Not Taken is Edward Thomas, eluding that the choice he has just made may be the wrong, or the right; but only time will tell. On the surface, Robert Frost's poem is a story about a walk on a wooded road, but it had deeper meaning to him and how he feels about the road. Also, the poem has a universal meaning about life and the choices it presents to you. Further, the poem is magnificently written in the typical rhyming Frost style. Lastly, a sigh might just be a sigh to you, but in this piece it means much more to Frost. Frost's 1916 poem The Road Not Taken is an example of how Frost writes poetry enthralling the reader with a grand opening and an unexpected ending that must be thoroughly analyzed. Frost wrote The Road Not Taken while living in Gloucestershire, England in 1914 though he was an American citizen. His friend Edward Thomas and he would often go on walks so Thomas could show him special plants or sights. When Thomas would choose a path, it was certain that every time he would regret the choice he had made sighing that they should have taken a ?better' direction (Robert Frost's Lesser Known Poems). When Frost wrote this he supposedly pretended to carry himself as Thomas just long enough to write the poem. Furthermore, Frost first wrote the poem as almost a joke for Thomas. But, it later held more value for him, as an example of life choices. The Road Not Taken is literally story about a walk on a road one fall morning. In the opening line it tells of how the road broke into a ?y.' This simple ?y' in the road eludes also to Frost's first line of the poem and his choice of yellow (?y') to describe the fall trees. Frost talks about the two roads and how they are the same, comparing them. No one else is on the road with the narrator. He is alone, contemplating the decision by himself. There is a decision that is going to be made by the narrator as to which road equally worn to take with no help from anyone. He knows that the road he takes will lead him forever, foreshadowing that the choice he does makes could be a regret or satisfaction. Frost then said in the present tense last stanza that the narrator's choice was the road less traveled. The road in the poem is not just a road; it is a symbol of choices in our lives that we must make. Frost implies that the narrator is sorry that he could not take both roads, see two different outcomes before the decision is made. The outcomes can not be seen though, looking as far as he could the road would bend and disappear into the undergrowth. He says to himself three times in the poem that both roads are equal, but in the final outcome he chooses the one less traveled, wanting wear (Frost 750). Only one road may be taken, one decision made, and one final destiny for a lifetime. The narrator could live to regret that he did or did not take another path. Also, his decision may be satisfying to him, not looking back at what may have been but instead of what is here, what he is living for right now. The Road Not Taken is masterfully written not just with forceful opening words and an ironic final stanza but also with rhyme scheme. Frost wrote it in abaab meaning that the last word in the first, third, and fourth lines rhyme. Also, the last word of the second and fifth lines of the poem rhyme. The rhyme scheme is rhymed tetrameter, meaning that there are four beats in a line (Robert Frost's Lesser Known Poems). Frost always used some rhyme scheme in his poems often joking that writing free verse is

Invasive Species - Melaleuca Tree essays
Invasive Species - Melaleuca Tree essays Introducing a nonnative species into an environment can cause some unexpected problems to the habitat and to native species. Although some introduced species are beneficial, such as food crops, game animals and pets, others can have a negative effect on the environment. Fifteen percent of species introduced have become invaders causing devastation to farms, health hazards for humans, invasion of natural areas, and the replacement of native species. If a plant or animal is introduced to a new area with similar plants or animals it causes competition for food or space. One species can be eliminated because of this. An example of a nonnative species being introduced into the United States and causing unforseen problems is the Australian melaleuca tree being introduced to Florida. The melaleuca tree is an ornamental plant that grows to be about eighty feet tall. The bark of the tree is spongy and its leaves are up to five inches long. The flowers of the melaleuca tree are white and small and the fruit that the tree produces are woody capsules with many seeds. This tree was introduced into Florida swamps in the 1880's because people wanted to dry up the useless swamps. They have since become a problem for the everglades because they invade moist open habitats forming dense and often impenetrable stands of trees. Native wildlife in these areas are threatened because the melaleuca trees crowd out beneficial native plants. The tree can spread very fast because it produces large amounts of seeds and most of the seeds that spread grow into large trees. Only fifty years after the tree was introduced into the United States it had already spread over hundreds of thousands of acres. By 1967, it was in Everglades National Park, and in 1993 it covered 488,000 acr es in south Florida. Melaleuca trees produce hot crown fires that result in mortality for native trees and pose a threat to people and animals in th ...

Mamenchisaurus - Facts and Figures
Mamenchisaurus - Facts and Figures Name: Mamenchisaurus (Greek for Mamenxi lizard); pronounced ma-MEN-chih-SORE-us Habitat: Forests and plains of Asia Historical Period: Late Jurassic (160-145 million years ago) Size and Weight: Up to 115 feet long and 50-75 tons Diet: Plants Distinguishing Characteristics: Unusually long neck, composed of 19 elongated vertebrate; long, whiplike tail About Mamenchisaurus If it hadnt been named after the province of China where it was discovered, in 1952, Mamenchisaurus might better have been called Neckosaurus. This sauropod (the family of gigantic, herbivorous, elephant-legged dinosaurs that dominated the late Jurassic period) wasnt quite as thickly built as more famous cousins like Apatosaurus or Argentinosaurus, but it possessed the most impressive neck of any dinosaur of its kindover 35 feet long, composed of no less than nineteen huge, elongated vertebrae (the most of any sauropods with the exception of Supersaurus and Sauroposeidon). With such a long neck, you might assume that Mamenchisaurus subsisted on the uppermost leaves of tall trees. However, some paleontologists believe that this dinosaur, and other sauropods like it, was incapable of holding its neck to its full vertical position, and instead swept it back and forth close to the ground, like the hose of a giant vacuum cleaner, as it feasted on low-lying shrubbery. This controversy is closely tied to the warm-blooded/cold-blooded dinosaur debate: its difficult to imagine a cold-blooded Mamenchisaurus having a robust enough metabolism (or a strong enough heart) to enable it to pump blood 35 feet straight up into the air, but a warm-blooded Mamenchisaurus presents its own set of problems (including the prospect that this plant-eater would literally cook itself from the inside out). There are currently seven identified Mamenchisaurus species, some of which may fall by the wayside as more research is conducted on this dinosaur. The type species, M. constructus, which was discovered in China by a highway construction crew, is represented by a 43-foot-long partial skeleton; M. anyuensis was at least 69 feet long; M. hochuanensis, 72 feet long; M. jingyanensis, up to 85 feet long; M. sinocanadorum, up to 115 feet long; and M. youngi, a relatively runty 52 feet long; a seventh species. M. fuxiensis, may not be a Mamenchisaurus at all but a related genus of sauropod (provisionally named Zigongosaurus). Mamenchisaurus was closely related to other long-necked Asian sauropods, including Omeisaurus and Shunosaurus.

Child Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Child Law - Essay Example The Child Abduction Act addresses the offence that is child abduction. In this case, an abductor could be a parent, or not. The act also provides that an individual who is involved with a child below sixteen years of age is deemed to have committed an offence at such a time as when he either sends or takes a child away from the United Kingdom, and not taking the trouble of seeking proper consent. Once a person is deemed to be a parent to such a child, the law recognizes such a person as being connected to the child in question (Wardle & Nolan 2002). In a situation whereby such a child was born at a time when his parents had not yet married, but evidence exists without any reasonable doubt that such a person is the father to the child, or a guardian for that matter, this is still counted as a connection with the child. The same case applies when such a person has been awarded the childââ¬â¢s custody (Wardle & Nolan 2002). The Child Abduction Act states that the consent to taking away a child has to be sought from the mother to the child, his father (only in a case where such a father enjoys parental responsibilities), the childââ¬â¢s guardian, or another individual who has been favoured by a residence order to take care the child. The same case applies to an individual that has been granted custody of the child in question (Wardle & Nolan 2002). According to the Child Abduction Act, an individual may send or take a child away from United Kingdom and not be seen to have committed any offence under certain circumstances. For example, an individual who has had a residence order ruled in favour of, in as far as the custody of the child is concerned gets exempted, or if an individual wishes to send or take such a child from outside of the United Kingdom for no more than a monthââ¬â¢s time (Lyster 2007). Experience economy - Essay Example Commerce includes all those activities, which are connected with trade and auxiliaries to trade such as transport, warehousing, insurance and banking and finance. Trade involves buying and selling of goods and its purpose is to bridge the gap between persons, i.e. the producers and the consumers can concentrate on their own occupations and at the same time buy goods to satisfy their consumption needs. The farmers can both enjoy each other's products with the help of traders. For example there are different types of cotton; jute, hides and skins are supplies to the producers of cotton textiles, gunny bags and shoes respectively. At the same time manufactured goods, which have been produced with the raw materials, are supplied to the consumers. Producers buy raw materials, machinery and equipment as well as stores and spare parts for machinery fro trading agencies and consumers buy practically all articles required for their daily use from traders. Goods are produced on a large scale in anticipation of demand. The markets for products are now spread over the length and breadth of the country and even extended to countries across the international borders. Hence direct sale of goods by the producers to the consumers is not possible. Without the help of traders and merchants engaged in trade it would be impossible for the system of large-scale production to continue. The trader involved in the actual operation of purchasing goods from producers and selling them to consumers. Traders and consumers are interdependent. Importance of trade Trade is of great significance for production as well as consumption of goods. It is through trade that goods produced at particular places are equitably distributed among users. With the help of trade goods are made available to consumers at the time of their need. It removes the hindrance of persons by bringing together producers and consumers who are widely scattered. Advantages of trade Advantages of trade are outlined below: It enables the producers to concentrate on their production activities; otherwise they would have to go in search of consumers for goods they produce. Trade makes goods available to consumers who can concentrate on their own occupations It results in specialization and large-scale production as the markets are now spread over wide territories. Sale of goods from one country and purchase of goods form other countries. It provides avenues of employment to various persons. It increases the standard of living of people as they can avail of goods of various kinds produces by different producers. Distinction between Home trade and foreign trade a. Home trade is concerned with trade between people of the same country while foreign trade is concerned with trade between people of two different countries. b. In home trade the buyer has to pay for the goods in home currency while in foreign trade buyer ha to make payment in foreign currency. c. Payment in home trade is simpler and less time consuming while in foreign trade, payment is not a simple process and hence is more time consuming. d. Home trade is not subject to restrictions, which exist in case of foreign trade such as tariffs, quotas, etc. e. Transport costs are relatively much less in home trade than in foreign trade. Excellence in Engineering Education :: Education Engineer Educating Essays
How should we describe the excellent engineer and what kind of education is demanded by such a person? Several issues are involved. One of these is the character of our times; that is, the best engineer out of the "science engineering" model of the 1950s may have little value in the early 21st Century. Another issue is the concept of education. How do education and training differ and how is excellence achieved? Finally, clearly, there is the issue of what we would expect of an engineer who is truly excellent. Fortunately for us, ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) seeks to define the excellent engineer and the excellent engineering program by outlining a number of criteria that should be met by any accredited program in engineering education. It is important to note, at the outset, that ABET begins with an overarching criterion that "engineering programs must prepare graduates for the practice of engineering at a professional level." (My emphasis) This must mean something more than mere vocational training. As a professional, the engineer must exercise considerable autonomy and use intelligent individual judgment. The professional engineer can be no mere employee; he/she must become a partner in the development of technology. By its very nature a professional partnership involves certain viewpoints, methods, and standards developed by the community of professionals, who have common interests and objectives, and these must stand independent of those who would employ o r otherwise seek the service of these professionals. Three of the five criteria developed by ABET recognize aspects of the educational institution that, I suspect, all will agree with without much hesitation. Students of high quality must be attracted and served well. Faculty of high quality must be attracted and retained. Educational objectives must be stated clearly and publicly; some form of evaluation must be in place to assure that these objectives are achieved. The one worrisome aspect of the new ABET criteria is what appears to be an overwhelming emphasis on quantitative assessment, phrased in terms of outcomes. While it is one thing to plan for and hope for significant outcomes, it is another to expect that genuinely desirable outcomes will always be so "objective" that quantitative assessment is remotely possible. At the very least, there should be some allowance for the obvious fact that certain outcomes take longer than others to be realized. It is true, of course, that the longer an outcome takes, the more complex are the f actors that contribute to it.

No More Couch Potatoes Essay
There is no doubt that there is too many obese people in this world, and that is clearly a problem, but we are focusing on the wrong things in our searching for a solution. It is not the overweight itself and the thinking of a better look when all the kilos are gone, no, it is a good physicality that is the main drive or motivation that leads to a good and forever being los of weight. Too many of the obese people do not keep being thin when they have lost weight, because they are not supported on their personality, the particularly obese young boy or girl, have being abused and bullied because of their overwhelming weight, and look. That breaks the physical motivation in those young kids, and makes them take a part of this way of being treated, they accepts it and puts on a role as the ââ¬Å"fat dudeâ⬠. Personality and losing weight has to expand i the same tempo to keep the necessary motivation, not just to loose more weight, but to get a stronger and more confident personality. One of the newest answers to the obesity problem, is the ââ¬Å"TV-cycleâ⬠, a bicycle connected to the TV, so to watch television, the kids now has to get a movement in the pedals, if not, the TV will turn off. That is not a way to get rid of the obesity. Treating the obese kids otherwise than regularly weighting kids in average teenage activities is giving them the fat-kid role, and that will not strength their outer persona. Respect and accept from other kids is important to get the essential feeling that creates a confident personality, a person who believes in him/herself. Wathing Tv, playing computer, and eating fastfood, those things are not the main problems, they are just a part of what the physical breakdown effects. Everyone do those things once in a while, and everyone should do it if they want, but everything is healthiest in small doses, and that is on thing that the obese kids has to learn, i a way so it feels natural in their minds to think of exercising, healthy food and so on. Once i had a rule that everytime i eated couch potatoes, i also took an apple from our fruit bawl, and everytime i had been surfing on the internet for too long, i went to my garden and played football. Everyone can do that. Everyone do like some kind of good and healthy food, and everyone do know how to run, kick to a ball, hop, whatever. If we just treat everyone the same, there will be a place to evolve, from overweight to regular weight, and from unconfident to confident about ourselves, and our surroundings.

Disengagement Theory Is The First Formal Theory Of Aging
Disengagement theory is the first formal theory of aging. It was first proposed in 1961 by Elaine Cumming and William Hendry. They both were researchers from the University of Chicago. The two developed their theory in their book Growing Old: The Process of Disengagement. In the book they criticized the implicit theory that people can adjust, be satisfied, and happy in old age. They can also be physically involved and remain active throughout their lives. ââ¬Å"Cumming and Henry argued that normal aging involves a natural and inevitable mutual and inevitable mutual withdrawal or disengagement, resulting in decreasing interaction between an aging person and others in the social system he belongs to.â⬠Because of the inevitability of death, the society and the individual mutually server their ties in advance so that the death of the individual will not be disruptive to the social system. The disengagement theory results in decreasing interaction between aging person and social s ystem. Disagreement occurs when the individual becomes aware of the shortness of life and the amount of time left. The individual wants to disengage by reducing the number of roles the individual plays. One of the most controversial things about this theory would be that the idea of disengagement was a universal meaning. Universal means it happens everywhere and in all historical areas. Inevitable, means that it happens sometimes to everyone. Bloody Mary and The Virgin Queen - 1970 Words
Bloody Mary and the Virgin Queen Mary and Elizabeth Tudor were both, by all accounts, strong and intelligent women endowed with many of the qualities that mark a successful ruler. However, only Elizabeths legacy is a positive one; her reign has been called the Golden Age of England, and she remains a heroine in popular history and even modern film. Marys reign is scowled at, and seen by most as a brief unpleasant period preceding the glorious ascension of Elizabeth. To account for this, one can examine each sovereigns maternal influences, governing styles, and choices regarding marriage. Maternal Influence Marys mother, Katherine of Aragon, has been described as a staunch woman of misguided principles (Weir 3).â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She contracted a matrimonial alliance with her nephew Philip, another Catholic monarch (Erickson 331). Their marriage caused a general outcry; the British did not favor Spaniards and feared that, upon their union, Philip would rule England as king; or that, if she died childless, he would seek to seize the throne for himself and his future heirs (337). This seemed a valid fear in light of Marys traditional feminine deference to male authority, but Mary declared that she would wholly love and obey the man she married, following the divine commandment, and would not in any way act against his will, but if he tried to interfere with the government of the kingdom she would have to prevent it at all costs (Erickson 333). For some, this was not enough; and the marriage contract specified that Phillip could not succeed. Thus, Mary was de termined to have a say in her own government. However, faith could guide Mary even if her husband could not, and she began to be very influenced by Catholic Cardinal Pole (Erickson 390). For all men who minimized her authority, Pole was the most blatant (Erickson 390). Pole gave Mary misguided advice concerning the religious conversion of her realm. He assumed that the religious situation in England was not unlike that in Italy, where the Protestant heresy had taken rather shallow root and had been decisively crushed by the Papal inquisition (Erickson 390). He failed to recognize the importance of the fact that a wholeShow MoreRelatedQueen Elizabeth: The Virgin Queen922 Words à |à 4 PagesLizzie Scott ââ¬Å"I am already bound unto a husband which is the Kingdom of England.â⬠-Elizabeth I (Add Intro) Queen Elizabeth was famously known as ââ¬Å"The Virgin Queenâ⬠for never marrying. The Concept of Liberty in US Political History An...
Introduction This analytical essay is commissioned to highlight the concept of Liberty in US political history along with an in-depth analysis of era which gave rise to several Political Parties in the United States during 1776-1803. Dating back to the era of 1783, in which the American Revolution came to its end, Americans nationals, specifically the white community of America, came in accord with a common perception regarding liberty of politics in the country and perceived the republican government (republicanism) as the best form of government which could stand for the societal good and prosperity while providing secure liberal societal milieu. On the other hand, there was another opposing yet prominent group in that era which was of the notion that these political parties can never serve a constituent of public life in America. This opposing group or faction observed political parties as the symbols of self-centeredness and thus, consider them a hindering factor in the success of the entire American nation. They firmly believed, as revealed by David Ramsay in 1789, that: In no age before, and in no other country, did man ever posses an election of the kind of government, under which he [leader] would choose to live (p.266). Consequently, this idealistic diversification led America to have two different contemplations of political liberty and chaotic perceptions regarding the most appropriate structure of governments to be implemented which can protect publicShow MoreRelatedThe Enlightenment By Locke, Paine, And Kant1492 Words à |à 6 Pagesbecause of their faith and if asked to justify themselves, they would not be able too. Porsche Exposed free essay sample
Do you believe that Porscheââ¬â¢s management is appropriately concerned with stockholder wealth? Does Porscheââ¬â¢s ownership structure work to the benefit or detriment of public shareholders? Although Porsche is publicly traded, the company is controlled by only two stockholders, the Porsche and Piech families. As the quotation by Holger Harter makes clear, the two families hold exclusive shareholder influence over management. An interesting point for class discussion is whether the families actually ever exercise these rights. It is not clear from the information or evidence presented that they influence or direct current management headed by Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking. They may simply agree with current leadership and therefore remain quietly complicit. What this means for minority shareholders is that they do participate in the distributed profits and any and all capital gains (losses) which the traded preference shares provide, but they have no voting rights and therefore no ability to act as owners in whole. We will write a custom essay sample on Porsche Exposed or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It also explains in part the companyââ¬â¢s relatively uncooperative response to the requests of analysts and stock exchanges for more frequent reporting (as well as more detailed disclosure in their financial reporting). A final related component of this governance discussion is the structure of management compensation. The compensation packages of senior management were nearly exclusively focused on the recorded profitability of the firm from year to year, and not on the marketââ¬â¢s assessment of that performance, the share price. . In your opinion is Porscheââ¬â¢s current currency hedging strategy protecting it from adverse exchange rate changes? Will it work as well in the long run as in the short run? Evaluate the other hedging strategies available to the firm and compare and contrast alternatives. Exposure: Porscheââ¬â¢s currency exposure is fundamentally a long-term operating exposure arising from where and how it operates its business.Because the company is relatively simple in structure compared to most multinationals, and transparent in the type of currency exposure it incurs, most of its currency exposure can be viewed as a series of transaction exposures, both existing (already an existing account receivable or inventory line item on the companyââ¬â¢s balance sheet) and anti cipated(not yet contractually existing, but with a high likelihood that they will occur). Alternatives. There are a number of alternatives, which we cover here in brief. 1) Pass-through. The discussion of exchange rate pass-through is relevant, but not really a hedging solution. Pass-through does exactly what it says, it passes on to the buyer a portion of the exchange rate movement. This is in effect what Porsche has already done to some degree as described previously. As always, at some point the price elasticity of demand for the product changes so that further price increases through pass-through result in declining sales revenue. 2) Diversifying operations. If the company believed that it would be continuing to generate significant proportions of its sales in US dollar markets, it could match these sales values with production values by manufacturing in a US dollar environment. Other auto companies like BMW (produces today in South Carolina) and Mercedes (produces today in Alabama) have pursued this strategy successfully. As each year matures, and the associated options expire, the company has replaced them with a new three-year option position. (The three-year time horizon may actually be longer, but Porsche has not been willing to describe in any adequate detail the nature of how their hedging program is structured or operated. ) 3) Do you think Porscheââ¬â¢s currency hedging strategy reflects a particular bias of management and ownership regarding shareholder value creation? Do you believe that Porsche can continue to predict the future movement of the euro?Students generally seem to come to a conclusion that, although the current hedging program is expensive to purchase and operate, it has done well to date. Also, although other premium-priced automobile manufacturers have chosen to diversify operations, and seemingly successfully maintained the con sumerââ¬â¢s faith in their quality and brand, this is a choice of management, and difficult to second-guess. That said, in the end, the enormity of Porscheââ¬â¢s exchange rate exposure is not going to go away.Hedging it with financial derivatives is inherently a stop-gap measure, and does nothing to restructure or prepare the company for the long-term. Therefore, the possibility of a financing hedge, dollar-denominated debt, should clearly be reconsidered. Post Script. In January 2004 the following article appeared in the Financial Times (Porsche itself did not make any press release related to this issuance). It seems that Porsche was beginning to increase the use of US$debt

Conquest Of Paradise Essays - Christopher Columbus, Age Of Discovery
Conquest Of Paradise 1492, Conquest of Paradise: The misrepresentation of the Film The movie, Conquest of Paradise is very inaccurate in its portrayal of Christopher Columbus and what he brought to the so called "New World". The movie shows Columbus to be the first person to discover America and to cross the Atlantic Ocean when it is known that others had accomplished this miracle years before he did. Also, the movie doesn't completely show the difficulty of the first voyage and the fears of the never reaching land after losing wind. Third, the movie shows the Spaniards and the Natives getting along peacefully and as one when in actuality the Natives were very unfairly mistreated. Lastly, the movie only shows the good things that Columbus brought to the islands and doesn't show how diseases were brought by the Spaniards. The movie portrays Columbus to be the first person to set foot on the Americas which is not true. Fabers writes, "Other explorers, notably Norsemen from Norway, Greenland, and Iceland, touched the shores of America many years before Columbus. More importantly, when Columbus first came ashore, he was greated by people he called "Indians." How could anyone "discover" a land where people already lived." (ix). Although Columbus was the first to cross the ocean and keep a written journal of his day to day travels many give him far too much credit and mistake him to be the discoverer America. In the movie Conquest of Paradise, the first voyage is shown much shorter and simpler than it was. In Roger Eberts review of Conquest of Paradise, he says, "What disappoints me a little about Scott's version is that he seems to hurry past Columbus' actual voyage of discovery. There is intrigue in the Old World and adventure and violence in the New, but the crucial journey that links them seems reduced to its simplest terms: The three ships sail, the crews grow restless, Columbus quiets them, and then land is sighted" (*http://www.mrqe.com*). The actual first voyage took over three month and was much more difficult and agonizing than shown by the movie. "On August 6, four days after departing, the fleet suffered its first mishap when the rudder of the Pinta jumped its gudgeons. This had been claimed as a deliberate act of sabotage by the caravel's owner, Christobal Quintero, or by some of her crew who had already lost their enthusiasm for a long voyage in strange and dangerous seas" (Rienits 38). The movie shows the Spaniards and the Natives getting alone well and working together as one without prejudice. In the movie they say they claim to come in peace and with honor, that they don't look at them as savages, that they will treat them as if they are their own wives and children, and the they respect the beliefs. In actuality, the Natives were severely mistreated and viewed as uncivilized beings for not believing in the same God. Many of the Indians were often enslaved or killed for no reason, and the women were captured and raped. Sale tells how Columbus was, saying, "We have seen how he conquered and ruled the Indians by force, killing fellow beings with no more compassion than a butcher for his beasts. (201)" The Natives who didn't agree with Columbus on his building a colonial outpost were called "very wild". Those who were decided ate human flesh were called "brutish faces". The Natives of Jamaica who helped many of the sick Spaniards giving them food and drinks, Columbus wrote that he was "surrounded by a million savages full of cruelty and our enemies." Finally, in the movie, Conquest of Paradise, Columbus and his men are shown bringing many good things to the islands when he really brought more bad than good. The movie shows the Spaniards bringing all good things such as carpenters, priests, noblemen, laws, horses, cattle, foods, and the word of God. The bad they brought actually out-weighted the good also bringing diseases, starvation, crime, slavery, and harsh cruelty towards the Natives. In less than fifty years after the arrival of the Spaniards the Natives were already suffering great losses. "In Hispaniola, the cruelty policy begun by Columbus and disease brought by the Spaniards resulted in genocide-the mass deaths of the kindly, peaceful Taino people. In 1492, the population was estimated at two hundred and fifty thousand. By 1538, only five hundred Taino people were still alive" (Faber 56). The Natives had no real enemies until the Spaniards arrived. Once they arrived the Natives felt that their land and beliefs

Writing tips for nurses, Nursing Standard - Emphasis
Writing tips for nurses, Nursing Standard Writing tips for nurses, Nursing Standard Being a capable wordsmith may not be what you signed up for. But clinical nurses are spending more and more of their working day on writing tasks. Rob Ashton of Emphasis gives six tips on how nurses can become better writers. A well-presented document, a clear and succinct email, a precise and persuasive report all go a long way to ensure nursing maintains professional standards. This makes sense, as good writing skills equal good communication a prerequisite for effective nursing. Just as nursing requires dedication and practice, so too do effective writing techniques within the clinical setting. One Identify your target audience. To write effectively, you have to understand the needs of the people you are writing for. Think of the variety of audiences you have to communicate with as a practitioner such as patients, other nursing professionals, physicians. Then think about how you communicate differently to each. If its a report for a healthcare organisation, find out the ethos of that organisation. If its for a nursing manager, do they need to be informed or persuaded or both? Two Overcome the fear of the blank page. Break through writers block by: establishing the purpose of your writing and what you hope to achieve using mind maps or spider-grams to get ideas flowing creating a defined timeframe with deadlines and milestones writing in incremental bursts if youre faced with a lengthy document Focusing on your readers needs but (crucially) forgetting about their possible judgements of the work. If youre really stuck, set an alarm for five minutes hence, then tell yourself you only need to write until it goes off. After all, how bad can five minutes be? What youll probably find is that you speed up as the time starts to run out, giving you the energy to burst through the block. But if that doesnt happen, stop at five minutes, give yourself a ten minute break, then set the alarm for another five-minute session. Two or three short sessions like this are usually enough to cure the block. These apply to most writing tasks, including proposals for improvement projects, reports, patient records, staff references, memos and even emails. Three Keep going until you have a complete working draft. Forget about perfection for now. Organise the relevant information on separate piece of paper (such as with a mind map see above), then write. Only when youve finished should you revise and edit. Even the greatest writers work from a rough, first draft. Make sure you plan first though, as a stream of consciousness can be very difficult to disentangle once youve written it. To help with the final edit, ask yourself if youve addressed all your pertinent issues, especially problems, action and results. Four Dont dress it up. Florid language and great swathes of rhetoric wont impress a busy board member, nursing manager or worried patient who wants to read only the salient facts. Time is of the essence in a clinical workplace, so clear, direct communication is key. Present your message clearly from the start in a straightforward style that will keep your audience interested. Five Dont be lax in your report writing. Computerised report templates may have made the task easier but they are no replacement for courtesy and good grammar. Never make shortcuts in punctuation and spelling, and make sure the facts are correct. Get someone else to look over the document if youre unsure of its accuracy. Six Be honest. If you dont understand the subject matter, the chances are those reading it wont either. Dont mask your lack of understanding with unnecessary jargon. If youre working collaboratively on a report or proposal, for example ask for help. With written communication now so much a part of clinical nursing, these tips and a little practice should give you the confidence to handle any writing task. A little time spent perfecting the process now will leave you more time for other pressing responsibilities in the future.
